Choose These Foods and Nutrients to Help Your Liver Detoxify and Do Its Important Job

  • I don't spend much time during the day thinking about my liver.  Do you?  Well, last week, I discovered why this is an extremely important organ in the body for our present and future health....
  • Last week, Dave and I had the privilege of travelling to Maine with Dr. Peter Rugg, MD, chair of USANA's Scientific Advisory Board.  During that time on the road, we chatted about the liver (amongst other things)..... he strongly recommends taking 3 Hepa Plus/Hepasil tablets with supper, to give the liver maximum support as it does its important work throughout the why below....
  • Love your Liver! The liver is an important organ that performs many vital functions. It processes almost everything we ingest, breathe, or absorb through the skin. It plays an important role in digestion and metabolism, and it also produces a variety of important proteins, including enzymes, hormones, blood proteins, clotting factors, and immune factors. The liver also plays a critical role in detoxification.
  • USANA's Hepa-Plus/Hepasil helps to combat oxidative stress in the liver with a powerful blend of antioxidants, including green-tea extract and broccoli concentrate.  It also includes USANA's patented Olivol for more complete antioxidant support.  With 240 mg of high-quality bioavailable milk-thistle extract per recommended dose, Hepa Plus provides comprehensive support for the liver.

Here are six foods that support liver cleansing:

    1. Cruciferous vegetables: Broccoli, cauliflower and cabbages are all high in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant that helps clear your body of free radicals (damaged cells in your body). They stimulate enzyme production in the liver, which helps flush out carcinogens and other toxins, and can help lower your risk of certain cancers.

    2. Artichoke: The thorny thistle contains flavonoids – powerful plant antioxidants that have shown to have anti-cancer properties. Artichoke also helps stimulate the gall bladder to secrete bile, which helps with digestion. Try this: Artichoke with Dipping Sauce:

    3. Dandelion: Both leaves and roots help detoxify the liver. The liver loves the bitter flavor of dandelion, which also helps stimulate enzyme production. The leaves can be made into a salad, while root is a soothing herbal tea.

    4. Lemon: This sour citrus fruit is high in vitamin C, which helps the liver clear out old, stored toxins. Try it squeezed in a glass of water first thing in the morning to stimulate your digestion and elimination. (At Sanoviv, they recommend half a squeezed lemon in 1/2 cup hot water and a pinch of Cayenne pepper, first thing in the morning)

    5. Garlic: This pungent bulb has high amounts of allicin, an anti-bacterial compound that aids in lowering blood lipids and reducing hypertension. It also contains selenium, which is key to metabolic functioning. Garlic stimulates the liver to self-cleanse.

    6. Asparagus: This skinny green vegetable is rich in beta-carotene, another powerful antioxidant. It also contains potassium, which is essential for healthy electrolyte balance and also lowers your risk of hypertension.
  • Eating nutrient dense foods along with the USANA Hepa Plus will give your liver maximum support every day.  It's THAT important!
