Suncreens Contain Harmful Chemicals. What Do You Avoid?

Skin cancer, says Health Canada, is the most common form of cancer in the country.  With more than 74,000 new cases expected this year (according to the Canadian Dermatology Association), it's obviously something to avoid.

So, you just wear sunscreen, right?  Well, it depends on the brand.  According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a non-profit advocacy organization, based in Washington, D.C., 60 per cent of the hundreds of sunscreens contain harmful contaminants.   Oxybenzone is one of them, a hormone disruptor some say can affect fertility, damage cells and cause allergies.  It easily converts to free radicals when illuninated.

Avoid Phthalates which are linked to birth defects.

Avoid vitamin A, which may be listed as retinyl palmitate.  It's a form of vitamin A that's combine with fatty acids for its anti-aging properties.  However, some research suggests it may accelerate skin cancer when applied topically to sun-exposed sun.

Looks like we should be reading the labels!

According to an article in the Winnipeg Free Press, August 8, 2011, here are a few things you can do to protect yourself from the sun:

.  Choose a sunscreen that offers UVA and UVB protection.
.  Choose a sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher.
.  Apply every 2 hours.
.  Avoid the peak sun hours between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
.  Keep children in sun-protective clothing, including wide brimmed hats.
.  Protect yourself even on cloudy days: UV radiation can penetrate cloud cover.

Apparently one sunscreen that is free of vitamin A and oxybenzone is Badger.

Personally, I am careful for the most part, and then I take the USANA Health Sciences ProBiotic and Hepasil for the liver, to help clear toxins out of the body.   According the the Free Press article, quoting Rick Smith, the Toronto-based executive director of Enviornmental Defence Canada, h says that it's very clear that a woman's breast cancer risk is at least partially related to the aggregate of chemicals that she's exposed to over the course of her lifetime.

That's another good reason to read labels carefully, and to take top nutritional products like USANA offers, to fortify, detox and protect your body.
