Probiotic Supplements May Reduce the Risk of Diabetes in Pregnancy

Did you know that birth size is a risk factor for future obesity?  And obesity is one of the risk factors for Diabetes?

A recent study reported by Usana Health Sciences, citing from the British Journal of Nutrition, found that probiotic supplements and dietary counseling could help reduce the risk of increased birth size and the likelihood of future obesity.  This could also help reduce the risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome during pregnancy.

The study included 256 women, all of whom were normally healthy and had no chronic diseases.  During the first trimester, the participants were randomized into control and dietary intervention groups.

The dietary intervention group was given intense nutritional counseling by a nutritionist, and then further divided into two groups: one receiving probiotic supplements and the other a placebo.  The probiotic capsules were taken from the beginning of the intervention (first trimester) through the end of exclusive breast-feeding.

Pregnancy outcomes and fetal and infant growth were analyzed during the two years of follow up.  No adverse events were reported and all pregnancies were of normal duration.

However, women who had taken probiotic supplements had a reduced frequency of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) of just 13 percent for the diet/probiotics group.  The diet/placebo group had a 36 percent rate of GDM and the control group, 34 percent.

The results of this study indicate that probiotic supplements and dietary counseling during pregnancy can be a safe and effective way to approach the epidemic of metabolic syndrome.

Note From Deanna:  It can be confusing to know which probiotics to choose and whether the ones in yogurt, for example, are sufficient.

Why choose Usana?  The ProBiotic from Usana Health Sciences, contains 12 billion colony-forming bacteria per serving at time of manufacture, with two strains of specific probtiotic bacteria.  They are clinically proven to survive the harsh acidic environment of the stomache, a very important factor when choosing a probiotic.

The probiotics join forces with the naturally occurring good bacteria that are already in the gut.  Your stomache is where the fight for good health can be won or lost.

Probiotics bring peaceful order back to the digestive process.
