Do You Pass the Leadership Test?

Hundreds and maybe thousands of books have been written on leadership qualities in business.  There's no doubt that leadership skills lead to better business.  The question is:  Do you zig or zag?

So, if you were to take a test on the topic, would you pass?  Would I?

Here's how William C. Taylor, cofounder of Fast Company magazine and coauthor of Mavericks at Work, would rank leaders.  It's from his article in Harvard Business Review, August 3, 2010.

"The true mark of a leader is the willingness to stick with a bold course of action - an unconventional business strategy, a unique product-development roadmap, a controversial marketing campaign - even as the rest of the world wonders why you're not marching in step with the status quo.  In other words, real leaders are happy to zig while others zag.  They understand that in an era of hyper-competition and non-stop disruption, the only way to stand out from the crowd is to stand for something special."

Taylor's article then goes on to give examples of top leaders who are zigging not just zagging.

My response is to be thankful that I "zigged" out of the corporate world and stepped into the world of a home-based business, with all the freedom that brings.  It means time freedom and abolishing the "glass ceiling" with no limit on my income potential.

I remember those days of a 3% raise, or of the owners taking away the management bonus and profit sharing program, all in one year.  That certainly woke me up.

It takes leadership for sure, to build a strong home-based business.  In our case, we partnered with Usana Health Sciences, where there is a myriad of support available.  I had tried having my own marketing business at one time, but that was rather lonely and difficult.

I'm looking forward to the Usana International Convention, where top leaders will share their "maverick" ideas for building a strong business.  Scientists and doctors will explain the world class products, which again, "zig" away from the ordinary fare on the market.

Those determined to be leaders, will be at the convention.  They'll take every opportunity to glean information that will make them more effective at communicating the vision for better health and wealth with Usana....and helping others do the same.

It feels good to be a "zigger" rather than a "zagger"  (Notice all the new words I made up today?
