Pure Rest Beats Insomnia

Insomnia. Restless leg syndrome during the night. Waking at 2 a.m. and can't get back to sleep. Snoring. Bad dreams.

Contrast that with a restful nap with your daughter during the day. Deep, uninterrupted sleep during the night. Peace. Quiet. Gentle dreams.

Why is sleep so important? According to Robert Alison, PhD in zoology in Victoria, BC, accumulating evidence shows that lack of sleep in humans and animals can result in obesity, high blood pressure and reduced life spans.

What's more, drowsiness impairs mental performance. For instance, 37 per cent of all motor vehicle accidents are caused by drowsy motorists, according to a University of Pensylvania study. Even minor sleep deficiencies impact on body chemistry.

So many people suffer needlessly from lack of sleep. But it is so important for antioxidant support and to maintain the body's immune function.

So, what can we do to induce a restful night's sleep?

1. Don't watch the news before going to bed. Read inspirational literature instead. Do some deep breathing exercises. Maybe even give yourself a facial (Usana's Sensé products make your face feel refreshed and relaxed.)

2. Don't eat heavily before bedtime. Have a restful atmosphere and limited light (The eye masks help your body's system to recognize that darkness means a time to sleep).

3. I take two of Usana's Pure Rest melatonin tablets about an hour before bed. Why? As we get older, we don't produce as much melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that promotes sleep and helps regulate the body's natural sleep and wake cycles.

4. A dentist friend also suggested chewing two of Usana's Active Calcium Plus tablets before bed, to help destroy bad bacteria in the mouth and to promote a restful sleep.

So I do all of the above. What works for you? Guard your sleep for a healthier life.
