H1N1 Flu Vaccines and Alternatives

In his recent blog, Dr. Myron Wentz,Phd, Immunology and Microbiology, suggests that if you choose to be vaccinated for the H1N1 virus, you request the nasal mist form rather than the injectable form. That's assuming it's available in your territory of course.

There is a shortage of the vaccine at present, so what do you do to fortify your immune system in the face of this and other viruses?

1. Studies show that moderate exercise every day builds your immune system. That includes weight bearing and cardio. Exhaustion and extreme exercise lowers your immunity and increases your risk of serious reactions to infections.

2. At least 8 hours of rest a day. Short naps in the daytime are good for your heart and the rest of you, at the best of times!

3. Drink clean water throughout the day. White tea reduces viral growth and protects the lungs against viral and bacterial damage.

4. Optimal nutrients, beyond what you can manage to eat. (You can eat 27 cups of spinach a day to get your 400 IU's of vitamin E or 20 oranges to get 1000 mgs of vitamin C). If you're not up to that, look for the best vitamin supplements you can find.

We are reading that it is important to take anywhere from 5000 to 15,000 IU's of vitamin D3 a day for optimal protection. Fish oils, antioxidants of various kinds including quercetin, curcumin, grapeseed extract, calcium/magnesium, vitamin C and natural vitamin E. A good multivitamin/mineral is also essential.

Avoid all fluoride products, such as mouthwashes, toothpastes and fluoride treatments, as fluoride makes it easier to produce more virus within your body. We love Usana's fluoride free toothpaste with ingredients to promote healthy gums.

My daily regimen of vitamins to fortify my immune system, come from Usana Health Sciences, and include: The Essentials (vitamins and minerals, ranked number one in North American in the Comparison Guide to Nutritional Supplements by Lyle MacWilliam)...Poly C, Active Calcium, CoQuinone 100 (CoEnzymeQ10), Proflavanol (grapeseed extract)and ProBiotics Plus (12 billion of the good bacteria for your gut)

Ask me how much of each I take and why. It's mega important to do everything you can to give your cells what they need every day to do battle.
